February is a strange month. We start it with a groundhog predicting the weather, the football season ends, and the weather (in my part of the world) is cold and wet.

Thank God for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition! On the cover is Kate Upton. Kate is no stranger to Sports Illustrated nor to this blog. A year ago I featured her, click here. Kate also appeared in last year's SI.

You may notice that on my initial story, I mentioned that Kate is from Australia. Well, not quite. She was born in Michigan and raised in Melbourne...the one in Florida.

Domestic violence among the idle rich? Please don't try this at home...or anywhere else!

Marston Hefner, Hef's 21 year old son was arrested late last night for allegedly beating up his girlfriend. TMZ reports that the young Hefner was at home with his live-in girlfriend, 20 year old Claire Sinclair.

The report says that a Sinclair family member called 911 and that Ms. Sinclair had bruises on her body. TMZ also reports that she told police Hefner punched and kicked her and then blocked her from leaving

The two have been dating, on and off, since 2010.
Sinclair was named 2011 Playmate of the Year.

Gas Prices Expected To Go...................UP

Every year we hear the same talk about how gas prices are expected to rise, in time for Memorial Day. Why? Why are they expecting gas prices to climb to $4.95/gallon in Chicago in the next 90 days? Because of unrest in the middle east!

Who could have expected unrest in the mid east?

38 years ago, it was 1974. There was a worldwide gas shortage. I was stationed in Europe and driving was banned on Sundays, throughout the continent! The pictures, below, were taken in 1974 in the United States. They show gas being sold "by appointment, only." Also, we had long lines at the gas stations, often with limits of 10 gallons per customer.

I remember this vividly and I have a question. If all this happened 38 years ago, why in Hell's name have we done nothing about this? We are still buying crude from the middle east. Why? We've got oil here. We're standing over it!

In the past 38 years, we've had both Democrats and Republicans in the White House. Each party has taken their turn of controlling Congress. We have crude oil off shore, we have in in the ground.

Only in America! The recently unveiled statue of Martin Luther King, Jr. has a flaw and the US National Park Service says that the flaw WILL BE fixed!

Keep in mind that we spent $120 million (£76m). The problem? The quotation on the side of the statue is inaccurate! Could you believe this? We spent $120 million and nobody proof read the damn quote!

The existing quote has King saying, "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness." Critics of the inscription have included the poet Maya Angelou, who was quoted as saying the shortened phrase made King sound like an "arrogant twit".

These words are actually taken out of context as they were part of a longer quotation, spoken shortly before his death, "Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter."

Martin Suspended Over Tweets

Roland Martin is an on-air news analyst at CNN. Since I don't watch CNN, I don't know the guy.

Well, ole Rollie got himself in some hot water. He is "off the air" because of two tweets that he made during the Super Bowl.

I have the quote: "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H & M underwear ad, smack the 'ish' out of him."

He also tweeted that a New England Patriot wearing pink "needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass".

On his website Martin apologized for his tweets saying that he was "truly sorry" to anyone who felt his tweets were homophobic or advocated violence.

CNN said that Mr Martin would not appear on air "for the time being". CNN added, "Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated."

So, if you think that this is a free country and that you have freedom of speech, you must remember that, yes you do, depending on who you are and who you piss off.

This was unexpected. Whitney Houston has died. Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown. She was 48 years old.These details will be presented soon enough.

Big time American network news is changing. I'm talking about the case of Mimi Alford appearing on NBC's prime time news show, Rock Center hosted by NBC's chief news anchor Brian Williams.

The story is that when Mimi was 19, a student at Weaton College in Massachusetts, she was hired as a White House intern. She says that during the first week on the job, JFK took her virginity and began an 18 month affair, ending when the President was killed.

IT'S ALL IN THE BOOK that she wrote on the subject.Here's what we have: A 68 year old, former groupie of a deceased President. I must admit that she is well spoken. The fact is that she was 19. He was 45, married with kids. The way she tells it, she felt honored or bound by duty to do the horizontal mambo with the prez. What a classy story!

Here's my point: This is the type of crap that I would expect to see in a supermarket tabloid, (or possibly on this blog!) not on a serious network news show. What Ms. Alford did with JFK was not monumental in any way.

Denture Thief Busted

This came to my attention and I thought I'd share it with you.

51 year old John R. Dicken was arrested early Sunday morning on a battery charge as police say that he attempted to steal a set of dentures from a female acquaintance - while they were still in her mouth!

This allegedly happened at the victim's home. Dicken was also charged with battery resulting in bodily injury, resisting law enforcement, public intoxication and possession of paraphernalia, including marijuana.

He remained jailed Tuesday at the Henry County Jail on a $14,350 bond.

Being a veteran, I don't feel the need to be "thanked" for my service on a regular basis. On occasion, it's nice, but not required, thank you.

On November 14, 2011, 3 days after Veterans' Day, there was a major tribute planned at Green Bay's Lambeau Field, as the Packers were hosting the Vikings on Monday Night Football.

ESPN did not air the adjoining pictures - choosing to air commercials, instead.Don't get me wrong. Commercials are important! Without them, we'd all be listening to and watching PBS! The suicide rate in this country would skyrocket!

Airing these pictures would have taken only a few seconds. If ESPN needed a few additional seconds to air their commercials, I'm sure that they could have arranged it with the NFL.

I'm sure that NBC won't make the same mistake at tomorrow's Super Bowl.

Actor Ben Gazzara Dies at 81

Sad news from New York's Bellevue Hospital. 81 year old actor, Ben Gazzara died, Friday, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Family members were at his side.

He was the son of Italian immigrants and is best known for playing emotionally complex men and villains. He earned Tony nominations for his appearances in three Broadway productions of the 1970s, a revival of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and his dual roles in a double bill of the plays "Hughie" and "Duet.

On television, Gazzara starred for two seasons, 1965 to 1968, on the NBC prime-time drama "Run for Your Life." He played a wealthy, successful lawyer, Paul Bryan, who quits his practice after learning he has a terminal illness and then embarks on a globe-trotting quest for adventure before he dies. The role earned him two Emmy nominations as best actor in a lead dramatic role.

He picked up a third Emmy nod for his 1985 role in the made-for-TV movie "An Early Frost," and won an Emmy for his supporting work in the 2002 HBO television film "Hysterical Blindness."

Good actor - one of my favorites. He is survived by his third wife, Elke, and daughter Elizabeth.

The prediction comes from a female bactrian camel in New Jersey. Princess "likes" the Giants. She's picked correctly in the last 5 of 6 Super Bowls! She is 88 and 51, lifetime, picking regular season and playoff games.

The way it works is that John Bergmann of the Popcorn Zoo in Lacey Township, New Jersey feeds Princess Graham crackers. He places one in each hand with the name of a team written on each hand.

Scalpers have always been around. The Internet makes things more interesting.

This year's Super Bowl will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. I've been there on several occasions. It's a great place to watch a game.

I have friends who will be going to the "Big Game." Most tickets were sold through the box office for $800 to $1,200. Pricey? You can buy the same tickets on line, now, for $2,200 - $7,800. Some scalpers are charging more. I was listening to WINS Radio and heard of tickets selling for as much as $17,000, each.

Of course, after the game, you'll want to go to a party. Maxim has a party, so does Playboy. These parties feature live music and an open bar. Cost? $450 - $1,500 per.

Did someone say something about a bad economy?

I'll be at home, watching the game, sipping on an Old Milwaukee and munching some chips & dip.

Robert "Juan Epstein" Hegyes Dies

It's been more than 30 years since "Welcome Back Kotter" debuted on ABC. This was the show that introduced John Travolta to the world. Robert Hegyes payed a character on the show named Juan Luis Pedro Phillipo de Huevos Epstein. The character was a Jewish Puerto Rican underachiever. Very funny character. He was famous for bringing notes of excuse, to class, signed "Epstein's Mother." The gag was repeated often and never got "old."

Hegyes died of an apparent heart attack after suffering chest pains at his Metuchen, New Jersey home He was 60.

Goodbye Banners

This blog has been around for more than 7 years. During that time I have experimented with advertising banners. For the past month, I added 20 banners from some very reputable companies. The marketing company that deals with webmasters (like me) says that I've had 205,279 ad impressions. Impressive? Maybe, until I see that only 32 people have clicked the banners! Most of the 32 people have been me...testing the links. Needless to say, I sold nothing.

I am not saying that the marketing company is a scam. I am saying that I am no longer going to waste time with them.

For these reasons, I have decided to dump the "banner farm" approach. If you want to donate money directly...No, keep your money - and keep visiting!

Manning Scramming?

The NFL regular season is over. We are in the two week period between the playoffs and the BIG GAME.

Yes, we have the diversion of the Pro Bowl (yawn) and nice little stories about commercials that were (supposedly) banned for the Super Bowl broadcast by the network.

Is the timing right for Peyton Manning to announce that he won't be with the Colts next season? Or. is the timing right for the Colts to pretend that they are making that decision?

The Colts may want to wait and see how many season tickets they can sell before making any kind of announcement.

Manning says that he wants to play. Of course, we all want things. A serious neck injury is, well, serious.

My prediction is that Manning will never play again. Whether he never plays again in a Colts' uniform or another, is still up in the air.

Well, Tyler was hired to sing the National Anthem at the Baltimore - New England game, today. I personally think that he did a horrible job, but I'm old. Wait a minute! Tyler is older than I am!

Bottom line is: Steven Tyler did as Steven Tyler does. There's no reason to be shocked about this. If you are upset with Tyler's performance, don't blame him, blame the people who hired him.

Meanwhile, at the start of the day's second conference championship game, Broadway singer, Kristin Chenoweth, sang the same song, at Candlestick Park...in the rain!

If you choose to play the audio, you will hear the fans booing. They are not booing the song or the performance. No, they are booing the images of the Giants' players and coaches being shown on the stadium's big TV screen. You would expect such behavior, during the National Anthem, to come from toddlers without a hint of culture.

Hakeem Nicks lets everyone know the Giants are going back to the Super Bowl.

In case you missed it, the New England Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens, this afternoon, 23-20.

Following that game, the Giants beat the San Francisco 49ers, in overtime, 20-17.

So...in two weeks, on February 5, the Giants and the Patriots will meet in Super Bowl XLVI (46).

Vegas odds makers are favoring the Patriots by 3 points.

CBS: Coach Paterno Dies

Coach Joe Paterno has died. The Penn State icon was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.

This story will be reported - at length - in the coming days.
For now, Paterno is survived by wife Sue Paterno, children Diana, Joseph Jr. "Jay", Mary Kay, David and Scott, and 17 grandchildren. A Brooklyn native and Brown University graduate, Paterno began coaching the Nittany Lions in 1966 and his tenure stretched to October, 2011, when he won his 409th game.

R.I.P., Coach.

Update: This story is based on a CBS report which was taken from a tweet made by @onwardstate - an online Penn State news outlet.

Scott Paterno, a son of the coach, has since tweeted that his father is alive but remains in serious condition.

Further Update: Coach Paterno died this morning, 1/22.

David Beckham Gets A Raise

David Beckham has decided to stay and play soccer with the L.A. Galaxy.

Reports say that the 36 year old will be getting $15 million over two years and that he turned down 18.7 million for 18 months with a Paris team.

Beckham has been pulling down $6.5 million a year with the Galaxy.

I may be missing something. I know he is a great player, and I know that he is a draw for attendance, both home and on the road, but the money seems a bit much for a sport that nobody around here seems to care about. Maybe it's that new California Math which has been made famous by the Golden State politicians.

Caldwell Canned!

Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell was fired today. His team won only 2 games, this season. Because of this, his future with the team had been in doubt for the past few weeks. OK, I realize that if a team is losing, some changes must be made, but was it Caldwell's fault. Probably not, entirely. Was Caldwell responsible for leading the Colts to the Super Bowl in his rookie year as head coach? Was he responsible for taking his team to the playoffs, last year, amid so many key injuries?

Who's fault is it that Peyton Manning did not have a suitable backup?

Is there a way that we can fire the owner?

"Blue" Cheeseheads In Green Bay? Photo By Matthew Emmons

In New York, the Jets are known as Gang Green, because of their green uniforms. The Giants...the "Football Giants" are also known as the G-men. Well, the G-men did it this afternoon in Green Bay. The Packers were slight favorites in the game. You may remember that Green Bay defeated the Giants during week 13, 38 - 35, in New Jersey. You would think that the Packers, at home, among the ghosts of Vince Lombardi and Curly Lambeau, would be able to knock off the G-men, right?

There's no need for me to analyze the game. ESPN and your local "water cooler expert" will take care of that. I would also like to point out that next week, the Giants travel to San Francisco, where during week 10 the 49ers beat them, 27 - 20. To add more irrelevant information, during week 9, the G-men beat the Patriots in Foxboro, 24 - 20.

If there were any logic to the NFL, especially at playoff time, I'd be able to figure it out on my computer....or on my cell phone. Have a good week, and we'll do it again next weekend...keep the beer cold!

Golden Globes

Tonight is the annual Golden Globes awards ceremony. It's a three hour show on NBC. I'm not watching it, mainly because, in an effort to be the perfect husband, after watching two football games, I gave the TV remote to the wife.

We are watching "peoples' Court - DVR-ed from earlier in the week. The cool part about watching a DVR is that you can zap past the commercials! I mention this for the benefit of my egocentric friends who own their own businesses and they like to see their mugs on TV - in their commercials. (Analog spots on HD TV!)

I digress.

The picture is of Sofia Vergara who is a very wealthy actress/model and is wearing a "borrowed" gown to the Golden Globes. If you look closely enough, you will see $5 million dollars worth of jewelry borrowed from Harry Winston! I must admit that when I look at a picture of Sofia Vergara, I don't normally look at the bracelets on her wrists.

Ironic enough? Nope, there's more! Half the people watching this extravagance are living off government checks!

Yeah, we can really relate...

Don't you love a happy ending?

It was New Year's Eve, 22 year old Erin Langworthy of Australia decided to "take the plunge" - bungee plunge - off Africa's Victoria Falls Bridge, 364 feet above the crocodile infested Zambezi River.

The cord snapped. Somehow, Erin survived. We have video:

The people who operate the bungee jump say that they have been in business for ten years with more than 50,000 jumps a year. They said that the odds of this happening are about 1 in 500,000.

Sounds about right.

This blog's hit counter has been going nuts! The number one "search word" is "crystal." Recently, my unique visitors have tripled in number. The "crystal" of whom we speak, is Crystal Harris. You may remember that she and Hugh Hefner were "going steady." Last year, they were engaged until she "broke it off"....(an unfortunate expression)..."ended the engagement" at the last minute.

So, I Googled the lady, Crystal Harris, and I found that she has her own site, www.crystalharris.com. It is similar to a blog and she has pictures or herself on it and she has some recent (6 month old) tweets at the top of her home page. You can become a "member" of her site, she has a "Store" and you can buy an autographed picture, just like the one that you see on the right. $19.95 - that's half a tank of gas for me.

Tough choice.

Hackman Doing OK

Gene Hackman is recovering nicely from what may have been a serious accident, yesterday afternoon. The 81 year old actor was riding his bicycle in the Florida Keys when he was struck from behind by a pickup truck. The impact threw him from his bike and caused injuries to his head and body. Hackman was air lifted to a Miami hospital. The report is that the two-time academy award winner suffered nothing more than "bumps and bruises."

Cruise Ship Runs Aground - 5 Dead, Scores Missing

These things are not supposed to happen. The Costa Concordia ran aground, Friday, off the tiny island of Giglio near the coast of Tuscany. 4,229 passengers and crew were on board. Five people died, hundreds were injured and more than 60 are missing.

We will hear much more about this story as it unfolds. I suspect human error to be the cause. Of course, my suspicion is subject to human error.

I have seen this picture floating around the Internet. Until now, I thought it was a fake, but, I am told by the guys at Snopes.com that the picture is real, it was taken last Spring.

Amateur photographer Frank Glick got the early morning shot at Sneling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. This is a bald eagle perched on the gravestone of Sgt. Maurice Ruch. Ruch was a WWII vet who was awarded a Bronze Star.

Dish Network has a new DVR which can record all three hours of primetime on the four major TV networks at the same time -- in HD -- and then store the shows for up to a week.

Cool! Unless you advertise on television. People are already zapping through TV commercials, this is the icing on the cake.

There is a 30 year old guy in Madison, Wisconsin who got himself arrested. His name is Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop. He legally changed his name, this past October.

Bezow was charged with (get ready for this!) carrying a concealed weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and a probation violation. This was after neighbors complained of "excessive drinking and drug use."

This guy's former name is Jeffrey Drew Wilschke. His Facebook profile says only that he enjoys eating, standing, walking and thinking, and that he belongs to the Orthodox Church Of Jerry Garcia Fans.

General Tom's Blog Banned (Again) By Ad Group

You know, this past weekend, I was looking at the popularity of this blog. I have three "Hit Counters" and they all tell me that this blog is at an all-time high with visitors! (Thank you!)

Over the years, the number of unique visitors has risen and fallen. As I mentioned, they are currently at historic highs, so I thought I would seek out some ads to run on the blog - and make some money?

There was this one agency which has good reviews. I applied and they turned me down for having "adult content" on the blog. I appealed saying that there is no nudity, here. Well, rules are rules. They are, for the record, not fans of blogspot/blogger or other free blog hosting sites. Who are they? I'd rather not say - they know who they are. This doesn't bother me, too much. I've been banned by much more successful advertising leeches.

The ads that you see on the right have been on (and off) the blog from the beginning. They are OK, the companies are wonderful, but I thought I'd look for a better deal.

The bottom line is the continuing fact that this blog is a hobby and I don't need the money, I have a job.

There's an uproar at Durango High School in Durango, Colorado. It's over a "senior picture" which has been thrown out by the book's student editors.

Sydney Spies says that she and her family will fight to have the picture included. The school district is backing the editors' decision. The Spies are threatening legal action.

Here's my take on this.....
She's a pretty girl. When I was her age, I was a little rebellious, myself. If she's anything like me, at that age, she is probably trying to make a statement. Wrong place. Yes, you are free to dress as you wish, but not in school...and not on the job...well, most jobs. We have freedoms, but we must also follow the rules. Sydney was not banned from her yearbook. Her picture was. I suggest that she wear a turtle neck sweater in her next picture. She will have made her statement - for those of us who know her story.

Old Friend With A New Blog

So, this past Saturday morning, my cellphone rings. This is a little unusual because it was Saturday and except for an occasional text from my wife, the cell phone just does not ring.

It was a call from my former Army roommate and frequent contributor to this blog, Benny Brown. You see, Benny is working at Radio Luxembourg where he is a modern day Alan Freed, Cousin Brucie, Wolfman Jack, Larry Lujack, Dan Ingram, Don Imus or Dick Biondi - (select any one...or two)

Well, Benny's boss wants him to write a blog. Benny was calling me for advice! This, of course is ridiculous, that a major media empire like RTL, and a bright guy like Benny would be asking a blogger hack such as I for advice. Let's just say, for the record, that I am flattered. What could I suggest? A Monday, Wednesday and Friday Foto?

Actually, Benny has a couple of entries, on his blog, under his belt. I put a permanent link to his blog along with an updated link to the "Listen Live" page of Radio Luxembourg. You can visit Benny's Blog by clicking here.
