In the history of American Major League Baseball there have only been 20 perfect games pitched. The Detroit Tigers Franchise has never had one, until last night. Last night, pitcher Armando Galarraga, who a few weeks earlier was tossing in the minor leagues, found himself pitching in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and 26 consecutive retired batters. A ground ball is hit to first base and Galarraga covers. The runner is out by a full step...game over? Nope. First base ump Jim Joyce, a veteran MLB umpire of 20 years and two World Series, flashes the "safe" sign. He later admitted his error.
I don't care if the Umpires have a union. Joyce should find himself amid the ranks of the Michigan unemployed - right now! All this talk about replays is balderdash. Fire the guy! He blew it. I realize that it's "Just a game." Well, for Jim Joyce, it's "just a job."
I can see Jim Joyce as a television spokesman for "Eye Mart."
Saturday Night Live, are you paying attention?
