A few days ago we observed the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. Then, I found this picture. It was taken on a hot July afternoon in 1918 at Camp Dodge, Iowa. What you are looking at is a group of 18,000 soldiers, stretching 1/4 mile to form the image of the Statue of Liberty. (Click the picture to see alarger image) The temperature reached 105 degrees and the men were dressed in heavy woolen uniforms of the day. A specially erected tower gave the photographer the correct angle. The picture was supposed to be used to advertise for War Bonds. It was never used.
