Wealthy Woman Leaves $34 Million To Nurse

Huguette Clark Gower

I've always thought that good things happen to people who do good things. This is (sadly) not an absolute, but it generally works out this way.

Recently, a wealthy woman died in New York City. Huguette Clark Gower died last month at 104 at Beth Israel Medical Center. She was rich - $400 million dollars, rich! Her daddy was a copper tycoon. Las Vegas is located in Clark County, Nevada. The county is named after her family.

In 1991, a nursing agency in New York randomly assigned a nurse, Hadassah Peri, to care for Clark-Gower. Over the years, Peri spent more time with Clark-Gower than anyone else. She also left up to $25 million to her goddaughter -- and $500,000 apiece to her controversial lawyer and accountant.

What about the remainder of the money?   An estimated $275 million -- was left to establish an arts foundation, the Bellosguardo Foundation. on her huge, 24-acre Santa Barbara, Calif., estate -- which she hadn't visited in 50 years.

But she didn't leave a single red cent to any over her surviving, distant relatives
