The self-inflicted death of television |
Television is dying. Sad. There was a time when it was entertaining, informative and necessary for some people.
Not anymore - it's dying.
It's odd. We have high definition TV, but the quality of entertainment is so watered down, that it's usually not worth watching.
With cable/satellite/ TV, the number of choices has exploded faster than population. This is a mathematical explanation of why fewer people are watching traditional network TV.
Aside from the numbers, it's the Internet! You can watch (almost) any show on the Internet, ON YOUR SCHEDULE! (With fewer commercials) If you watch on-line, you won't need cable or satellite! You can get headlines, scores and weather at any time, on-line with Facebook, blogs, etc. You don't have to wait until 6 or 11PM and sit through half an hour to get the info you want.
Money! The above wouldn't mean anything except that there is money involved! I sell radio ads. Everyday, I see people who would rather advertise their business on local TV. Sure they know that their commercials are zapped. But they admit that it sure is swell when they go to the local Kroger and strangers know their face from the TV commercials and they say "Hi!" Also, there is an epidemic in my part of the country where advertisers will put their kids (or grand kids) in the commercial. Kids' voices are hard to understand and they usually aren't cute. Certainly not as cute as our own little rug rats!
So, here's what's happening:
Viewership is spreading out and shrinking.
Revenue will also continue to shrink.
With less $, quality will continue to fade.
TV will eventually enjoy the status of AM radio!
