Sochi Gold |
Here's something cool about the medals being awarded at the Sochi games. February 15 marks the one year anniversary of the meteorite that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia. The gold medals awarded on that day will each contain a fragment of the meteorite. Why? Well, the Region Culture Minister of Chelyabinsk says that both the Olympics and the meteorite strike are global events. The events which will offer the special gold medals are, the men’s 1,500-meter speed skating, the women’s 1,000-meter and men’s 1,500-meter short track, the women’s cross-country skiing relay, the men’s K-125 ski jump, the women’s super giant slalom and the men’s skeleton event. There is also a cash award. If you win a gold medal, you also win $25,000, $15,000 for a silver and a bronze medal gets you 10 grand.
These winnings are subject to federal income tax.
