Groundhog's Day 2014

Today is Groundhog's Day. The one day of the year that we turn our attention to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and a humble groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil. Each year on February 2, the groundhog comes out of his "hole" at Gobbler's Knob and takes a look around. According to lore, if he sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, we will have an early spring. This has been going on every year since 1887. In the past 126 years, Phil has seen his shadow 101 times and has not seen it 17 times. If you did the math, you saw that there were a few years where records didn't survive. It doesn't matter, According to the Huffington Post, in the past 25 years, Phil has only been correct 43% of the time. That's OK. We're trying to have some small town fun, here. This morning, Phil saw his shadow. So, we will have six more weeks of winter weather.

 Case closed.

Raise a glass to Phil, take a nap and get ready for tonight's Superbowl.

Groundhog's Day

February 2 is Groundhog's Day. There are people who take this very seriously. To me, the thought of a rodent being scared of his shadow and running back into his hole for 6 more weeks of winter is, well, silly. The other possibility, of course, is that the groundhog does not see his shadow. Then, Spring is "right adount the corner." (In 6 weeks?)

Here's the official word:
On Gobbler's Knob this glorious Groundhog Day, February 2nd, 2009
Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators
Awoke to the call of President Bill Cooper
And greeted his handlers, Ben Hughes and John Griffiths
After casting a joyful eye towards thousands of his faithful followers,
Phil proclaimed that his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers were World Champions one more time
And a bright sky above me
Showed my shadow beside me.
So 6 more weeks of winter it will be.
