Idle "Idol" Ratings

The ratings are in for the final episode of this tear's American Idol...and they aren't very good. Sure, it was the most watched show of the week, but, a drop of 32% of your viewers, in only one year, is a little hard to swallow. This year's show was watched by an estimated 21.5 million Americans.

What's wrong?

Several things are happening at the same time. The audience is being fragmented in historic proportions. We have more choices, now, than ever before! NBA playoffs, the Internet, etc., etc.

Also what may help the show gain back viewers, make it shorter. We don't want to sit through 2 hours when all we want to see is the 5-10 minutes when we see who won!

Yes, you can show more commercials in 2 hours than you can in, say. half an hour. There's a delicate balance, here. The desired equation will always be determined by money! Fox would have a six hour Idol Finale show...on a Sunday...if they thought you would watch.

Two more things about Idol. The judges. Someone should tell them to be a little more critical and specific. There's too much "syrup" on the panel. In real life, it's almost impossible to have three "divas" love the same things, as often as these three do.

The final thing is something that you never see. I suggest that the producers stop "over producing" the show. There is no substitute for TALENT. Don't try to "fix" the reality that some people are more talented than others.

Jessica really won. You'll see this within three years.....on the music pop surveys.
