Jim Lange Dies at 81

Jim Lange - "The Dating Game."
He was most famous for hosting "The Dating Game" on ABC TV. The show was painfully campy, but Lange did an excellent job pulling it off. It's funny that he's best known for this silly little network TV show. It comes as no surprise that what he loved doing most was radio. That's right. Jim Lange was a radio DJ for decades on the west coast. He retired in 2005. This is what he said about radio, “You don’t have to worry about lighting directors and cameramen or script writers and all that....Good radio is still the most fun,” he said, “It always will be. Plus, you don’t have to wear makeup and you don’t have to shave.” Amen. He forgot to mention that network TV money is immensely better! A couple things that I didn't know about Lange - he got his big break as the announcer on the Tennessee Ernie Ford Show and that he spent three years in the Marines. The guy was a definite icon and a significant part of American pop culture of the '60s and the '70s.

Jim Lange died of an apparent heart attack, yesterday, at his Mill Valley, California home.

R.I.P., Mr. Lange.
