NFL Picks - Week 11, 2014

Last week was a good one for me! (Go figure?) Here are the season stats: 11 and 2 for week 10 and 98-46 1 on the season.

I expect to be offered a job, doing this professionally, very soon.

Week 11 is a little different. The good teams seem to be matched up with good teams. Struggling teams are matched up with struggling teams.

By the way, I'd like to thank you guys for visiting, today.  I notice that we now have more than a million and a half hits.  One third of that figure happened in the past year.  While some people may say, "Get a life!"  I'll say thanks!  Here are my picks for this week.........

Tuesday Foto - Special Veterans' Day Edition - Zienna Eve (AKA Fannie Munch)

Zienna Eve
Today is Veterans' Day. As a veteran, I would like to thank all vets for their service to our country.  Enjoy the day and enjoy your freedom.

You may also wish to enjoy our little Special Edition Veterans' Day Foto.  Her name is Zienna Eve or on some occasions, Fannie Munch.  Either way, she's a 20 year old from Denmark.

Everything that you see is God-given, authentic equipment.   A little bit of air brushing may have been used, here.  Think of it as "make up."

So, if you have the opportunity on this Veterans' Day, feel free to buy a beer for a vet.  It's not much, but any appreciation is....well, appreciated.

NFL Picks - Week 10, 2014

This is the much dreaded WEEK 10 of the National Football League season.  I say "much dreaded" because it has been my experience that this is usually when screwy things happen.  Look for the under achievers to surprise everyone with big plays.  Look for upsets.

With that in mind, I'll still play the percentages.  Last week I was 9 and 4, 87-44-1 overall.

CLEVELAND at cincinnati

tennessee at BALTIMORE
KANSAS CITY at buffalo
miami at DETROIT
DALLAS at jacksonville
san francisco at NEW ORLEANS

I took this picture!

That's right, I took this picture. Big deal? Well, maybe when you consider that I was using a relatively cheap digital "point-and-shoot" camera with a very slow shutter, shooting into the sun. I had to snap the picture as the quarterback released the ball.

NFL Picks - Week 1, 2014

Steelers' "Warm Weather" uniform
This is the opening weekend of the 2014 NFL season. We, at the blog are almost excited to bring you another season of fearless predictions. It's been our experience that most of these predictions are "right on the money!" The problem is that often the teams screw it up for us, by losing - making the predictions look bad. You must realize that we (at the blog) don't win or LOSE the games. It's the millionaires on the field. It's a situation where we love the game, but some of the players......well some of them should be sitting on their front porches waiting for the mailman to bring them their monthly checks.

So, Week 1...here we go!

green bay at SEATTLE
NEW ORLEANS at atlanta
cincinnati at BALTIMORE
buffalo at CHICAGO
washington at HOUSTON
tennessee at KANSAS CITY
NEW ENGLAND at miami
OAKLAND at jets
jacksonville at PHILA
cleveland at PITTSBURGH

Remembering Joan Rivers

I had a crush on her in the '60s.

She was a Brooklyn girl who wasn't afraid to tell it like it was. I used to watch her on the Ed Sullivan Show. I'm told that she was a guest on the Tonight Show, as far back as the Jack Paar era. Rivers said that she learned from Johnny Carson. Maybe, but she also learned from Lenny Bruce. She often joked about celebrities. Sometimes her humor was accepted as being rude or cruel. Perhaps. When this would happen, she'd admit that it was a stupid joke or gag. What she would never do is apologize. Political correctness was a concept that she never embraced. This is why I respected her.

Like her or hate her, she was very good in several areas. She wrote jokes, movie scripts and books. She acted on TV and in the movies. She did stand up comedy. She was a TV and radio host and interviewer. Her longevity was impressive as was her ability to do so many things, so well.

She was the first real comedienne that I ever remember seeing.  All comics owe her a debt and if they're smart, they can watch some of her routines and learn something.

Like her or hate her, she was unique. The woman needed no introduction.

Removal of "Offensive" sign offends me

Offensive Sign
There's a restaurant, Sneakers Bistro, in Burlington, Vermont that serves food. Among the food is bacon. An Islamic woman who lives in the area found the (adjacent) sign to be offensive and made a big stink. The restaurant decided to remove the sign. One of their reasons for doing this was "safety." They were fearful that a dangerous situation would arise over a sign that advertises BACON!

Here's what I see is wrong, here. The Islamic woman should realize that some people eat pork products. She's in the USA. If pork comsumption is so revolting to her, maybe she picked the wrong country to live in.

Equally wrong is the restaurant's immediate decision to cave in and remove the sign. This decision would keep me from ever eating at this greasy spoon.....ever.

Perhaps the Islamic woman should move to Isreal. I hear that there's not a lot of bacon there.

Tony Stewart Kills Sprint Driver

Famous NASCAR driver, Tony Stewart was behind the wheel of a sprint car that ran over another driver on Saturday night at Canandaigua, New York. The incident began as Stewart was passing Kevin Ward, Jr. Stewart's right rear wheel made contact with Ward's front left wheel, sending Ward into the outside guardrail and out of the race. Ward got out of his car and walked to the center of the track to confront Stewart who was still driving, under a yellow caution flag. The video shows one car avoiding Ward, followed by Stewart who hit Ward. Was Ward wrong to get out of his car after the wreck? Yes. Unless there's a fire, you stay with your car. Was Stewart wrong to drive so close to where Ward was standing? Definitely! Stewart is guilty of "something" here.

 Watch the video.

Advertising Overdose

Red Zone Advertising
I love advertising. It's what I do for a living. If you use creativity, humor and some thought, it could be as enjoyable as the event that it is interrupting. In San Francisco, the local TV station that is carrying the 49ers pre season games has placed a large Toyota ad in the "red zones." These are electronically generated images, visable only on TV. Toyota pays big bucks for this. Problem is.....it's irritating to see, it's pre season football being played by many guys who probably won't be on the season roster. It's a waste of money, Toyota. Instead, why not a small logo icon in the corner of the screen. Maybe several versions of the logo - depending on how the 49ers are doing on the field. For example, when the 49ers commit a turnover, the logo would rapidly deflate. When they score, the logo could dance around a portion of the screen. This could add to the game!

It is possible to make money without being stupid about it.

L'Oreal vs Axelle - It's All Cosmetic!

Axelle Despiegelaere:
Jokes about hunting down Americans
So you have probably heard about the 17 year old Belgian girl who was "discovered" in the grandstands at Rio de Janeiro as Belgium payed against Russia in the World Cup. Axelle Despiegelaere's photo went viral and she supposedly received a modeling contract or offer from L'Oreal. The offer was later killed when L'Oreal caught wind of some of her Facebook pictures. Immediately we started pointing fingers at her or at L'Oreal as to who's the BAD GUY! Here's what we are missing. She's 17! Do you know of anyone who is 17 who has been on an African Safari? Do you know any 17 year olds who traveled to South America to watch a soccer game? The girl doesn't need a contract with L'Oreal. SHE'S RICH! There's nothing wrong with being rich. In this case, it makes here less of a victim. L'Oreal cares about their IMAGE. They don't care about the girl or the hunted animals. They care about their IMAGE. The situation is cosmetic! (Pun intended.)

Did anybody read her caption below her Facebook picture?

Read it! If you are an American you may be offended. I am an American and I am not offended since I have known girls like Axelle. Girls like her have never needed to make a serious decision on their own. They have never had to earn a paycheck. I don't expect her to be much more than a bimbo. Besides, L'Oreal, did you happen to see that large scar above the bridge of her nose? You could probably cover it with makeup, right?

Tenth Anniversary Foto - Xena Kai

So, what can I do for my 10th Anniversary? Should I reveal a new Washington D.C. scandal? Naw, we'll see many more without any of my help! Here are a couple of pictures of a new friend of mine, Xena Kai. Xena is a supermodel from San Diego California. Supermodel? Sure, like this is a SUPERblog! Xena is 22 years old and has many pictures on the World Wide Web. I should point out that it is widely accepted that Xena is not working with 100% original parts. (I hate to burst your bubble.) Normally I shy away from models who are not 100% natural, but occasionally I break my own rules, either by error, or as in this case - on purpose. In either case, click the picture for a larger image, remember to eat your vegetables and don't spend too much time on-line.

10 Years of General Tom's Blog!

Ten Years of Stuff
Yes, it's been 10 years since I began this blog. During that time, I've seen many changes in the world and in blogging itself. This project began with opinion pieces and humor, some satire - you know, stuff like that. I got a few visitors but it wasn't enough. I branched out to include a Friday Foto. That changed everything! Finally, I was receiving hits from every corner of the world. Probably from pre-teen males who don't speak English.

I've always made this site SAFE FOR WORK. So, as you are busy doing things that your supervisor should be doing, and you need to take a break, you could always see what General Tom is doing.

There are so many public opinion sites and political sites on the Internet now that I don't see any reason to comepe with nor to copy them. I've noticed that the BLOG format is dying. It is being replaced by FACEBOOK and other social media. This is probably a natural evolution. With this blog I can reach an unlimited number of people - friends and strangers. With FACEBOOK I can only reach friends - usually on a guaranteed basis - but I'm still "preaching to the choir" and not growing. How's business? Really, not so hot. I use two hit counters and both are showing low numbers. That's OK. If you're reading this, I've succeeded at least a little. If you are reading this on the blog site, please visit the facebook page and "like us." After you "like us" be sure to "SHARE" anything that you see that you think may amuse your little Facebook friends. Thanks for reading this.

I wish you good health!

Bad Joke of the Day

Many of you know that I work at a radio station. Well, the morning show guy is going on vacation and for the next week, I'll be doing the morning show. One of my duties is to come up with "The Bad Joke of the Day."

Here's one that I can't use on the radio:

How do you catch a polar bear?
You cut a hole in the ice and put peas around the hole.
When the bear takes a pea, you kick him in the ice hole.

89 Year Old Vet Goes Missing From Nursing Home, Found On The Beach At Normandy

Bernard Jordan, then...
A
...and now.

n 89 year old veteran was reported as missing from a nursing home in England. He was found this morning, safe and sound, on the beach at Normandy. You see, this morning was the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion. Bernard Jordan wanted to attend today's ceremonies but was told that the proper arrangements could not be made. He slipped out and took a bus to France. Bernard Jordan was only 19 years old on June 6, 1944. That's when he and thousands of others stormed the beaches of northern France in the largest invasion in world history. His appearance may have changed a little, over the years, but his spirit hasn't diminished.

The guy's a hero.

Thank you, sir!

Friday Foto 6/6

It's Friday, again. This week for the Friday Foto, I thought that I'd post a picture of a nameless woman. Not only do I not know her name, I don't know where this was taken nor what she's drinking!

I'd guess that she's on vacation at a tropical location somewhere in the world.

When I found this picture, I immediately noticed her dimple, beautiful white teeth, stylish bathing suite and her authentic smile.

Yeah.

Baseball's Don Zimmer Dies at 83

If you are a fan of baseball, you know the name Don Zimmer.
Don died today of natural causes. He was 83.

His career spanned 60 years. As a player, he was hit by a pitch and was nearly killed before he reached the major leagues.

He was the starting third baseman for the New York Mets when they began in 1962.

WGN Radio Drops The Cubs

It has been announced that WGN Radio will cease broadcasting Chicago Cubs games at the end of this season.

Huh? If you aren't familar with the Cubs or with WGN, the radio station IS Chicago. The Cubs ARE Chicago's baseball team. Sorry, White Sox - the Cubs have more fans. Anyway, the tradition of Cubs baseball on WGN is crumbling.
  This tradition began in 1925
Why is this happening? Is it because the Cubs are playing horrible baseball? NO! The Cubs are famous for playing horrible baseball! I'll tell you the reason - GREED! We have a radio station in my area that has been carrying the Cubs for more than 20 years....until this year. The cost of carrying the cubs is now prohibitive in our area of rural Indiana/Illinois. At one time, it was free (as it should be) if the station carried the network commercials. Who's being greedy? The Cubs? Probably. WGN? Possibly, but probably not.

Look for the Cubs on WBBM radio next year.

Wrigley Field is celebrating 100 years, this year. Attendance at the ballpark is down more than 15% from 2009. You can blame that on ticket prices. If you aren't rich, you can't afford to go to too many games. If you are rich, you have other things to do. The Cubs and their followers will, of course, survive. Chicago is an amazing place. It has a history of corrupt government and voters who can't seem to get it right. It also has a history of supporting a losing baseball team.

It's Chicago.

Super Bowl 50...not L

Super Bowl 50 instead of Super Bowl L
Ever since the fifth Super Bowl, the games have been referred to with a roman numeral. This will temporarily end for the 2016 game.

You see, 2016 will be the 50th Super Bowl. 50 is L in Roman Numbers. L in sports is LOSS. Sound dumb? No arguement from me.

We are told by the league that the 2017 game will be Superbowl LI.

It's funny that they didn't have a problem with Superbowl XXX?

Bakery Refuses To Make Wedding Cakes For Anyone...after losing discrimination case...

Jack Phillips, Masterpiece Cakeshop, Lakewood, Colorado
There's a guy who owns a fancy bakery in Lakewood, Colorado. Jack Phillips calls his place Masterpiece Cakeshop. Jack says that he does not approve of same sex marriage and that he will not make a wedding cake for a same sex wedding. He says that the bible does not approve, either. For Jack, it's a religious thing. More important than Jack's religious belief is the refusal to serve a customer based on his sexual orientation. Jack lost a legal decision and he lost the appeal. He still never made the cake. During this time, Jack says his business actually grew!

Here's my point. I don't care what gay people do. I don't - until it affects my freedoms.

By the way, Jack Phillips no longer makes wedding cakes - for anyone - at all.
If you are gay, is this a victory? If you are straight, well, you can no longer buy a wedding cake from this guy.  Your freedom is being blocked.

Kimye Wedding Coverage

Damn - I wish I could write like this!

From the New York Post, the Kim Kardashian - Kanye West wedding:

Jerry Vale Dies at 83

I didn't see anything about this on the Internet until I saw an obscure Associated Press story on the passing of Jerry Vale. Some of you gavones may not know who Jerry Vale was, so I am providing a link to one of his fine recordings on You Tube.

Jerry was from The Bronx. He grew up poor and earned money in High School by singing in clubs in New York City. This was long before Rock & Roll. Growing up in an Italian-American family, I am familiar with his music. His popularity peaked in the 1950s, however his songs will live on in the music piped into many of your better Italian restaurants. Jerry Vale died this past weekend, at home, in his sleep. He was 83.

Monday Foto - Maddi Hunter

Maddi Hunter
This week's Monday Foto comes to us from Australia. Maddi Hunter is a designer. More specifically, she's an artist. I did some checking around and I see that she hasn't used her Twitter account for two years. I love a good mystery, don't you?

There are several pictures of her on-line. I think that this may be the best.

Her Art business is based at Coolum Beach. Coolum Beach is on the east coast of Australia, a little north of Brisbane.

That's all I know about her. Click the picture for a slightly larger picture...and have a great week!

How To Stop A Bully

How I stopped a bully...
There's been a lot of talk about the problem of bullies. It's my opinion that the problem has gotten worse with the breakdown of the two parent family. I'm not a sociologist, but does anyone think that a kid can be brought up BETTER by one parent than by two? I don't mean to make light of bullies. In fact, I was bullied briefly as a first grader. I was a small kid and as I remember, the bully was a big kid who would make fun of me and push me around. I know that this seems odd since I'm such a cool guy, but it did, indeed happen. I found a way to stop it immediately. There was no need for counseling or anything like that. Where I went to school, all of the first grade boys went to the "Boys' Room" at the same time. Well, my bully was bothering me in the restroom. He was off to my right as I was addressing the urinal. I was so mad at the kid that I spontaneously did something ingenious. I turned to my right and gave him a golden shower. This was the end of my being bullied.

Of course, the teacher was enraged. I got in a lot of trouble. You see, this was a time when being bullied was not fully appreciated. Whatever punishment I received was worth it. I was famous for my ability to ward off bullies. If there was ever any doubt, I'd make a move toward my fly and the situation would be immediately diffused. I don't recommend this remedy for everyone. I also would not rule it out.

Use your best judgement!

Report: Donald Sterling Has Cancer

More bad news for Sterling
The New York Post reports this morning that Los Angeles Clippers' owner Donald Sterling is battling prostate cancer. The irony here is that he recently received a lifetime ban from the NBA against any association with HIS team. Public opinion of Sterling is sour following his alleged racist remarks which were recorded by his little girlfriend. While there is controversy over whether Sterling's punishment fits his crime - did I miss the trial and conviction as we went "fast forward to the "punishment phase?"

Being an attorney, I'm sure that Sterling and his colleagues are looking at several different angles to appeal his situation. Legal appeals take time. He doesn't have much time.
It doesn't matter.

Friday Foto - Jerilyn Samuel

This week's Friday Foto features the natural beauty of Jerilyn Samuel. Jerilyn isn't a model. I believe that she is a student...somewhere, studying...something.

She has plenty of pictures on the Internet. Most of them show her partying with friends. It's easy to understand that someone who looks like this would attract a lot of attention. She may be behind this, but in the case of her being featured, here, I simply stumbled upon her picture and knew that she is definitely Friday Foto material.

Still reading? Probably not.
