World Cup Viewing Record

Sunday's World Cup Championship game was watched by more people in the US than any other Soccer match, ever. An estimated 24.3 million were watching Spain defeat Netherlands 1-0. The most watched World Series baseball game in 2009 drew 22.3 million U.S. viewers.

OK, there were some differences. The World Series is a best of seven series. The World Cup final is one match. The World Series was played at prime time - competing with other prime time, first run shows. The World Cup final was aired on a Sunday afternoon - not much competition.

Still, the World Cup's TV ratings in the US were surprising. Will we be seeing more soccer on TV? Maybe. The networks should be asking themselves if they think that we are more likely to watch a soccer game, instead of our steady diet of prime time sex and violence?

I'd put my money on the sex and violece and lame sitcoms!
