Nun: None Too Wise, Is Charged

Having been taught by some very strict nuns, this story has a special degree of irony for me.

A Catholic Nun who enjoyed taking gambling trips to Atlantic City, New Jersey has been charged with stealing a bunch of money from the college where she worked.

Sister Marie Thornton was the VP of Finance at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. She's accused of embezzling between $850,000 and $1.2 million over a ten year period, 1999 - 2009. She resigned or was terminated (or something) in 2009.

She has entered a plea of not guilty

It is alleged that she would send phony bills to the school and pay them to finance her gambling trips to Atlantic City.

Thornton's lawyer Sam Talkin said: "We think the case will be resolved in a manner fair to all the parties involved."

She could get 10 years in prison....but personally, I wouldn't bet on it.
