9/11 Wine Distasteful?

There's a small vitner on Long Island, N.Y. who is producing a special wine for the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Lieb Family Cellars of Mattituck says that they will donate up to 10% from the sale of each bottle to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

The wine has been formally approved by the Sept. 11 Memorial Board. Each bottle will retail for $19.11.

Poor taste? I think so. I think that anyone or any business that even thinks about profiting directly or indirectly from the obscene events of September 11, 2001 is a creep. (Lieb, you can keep your 10%) This goes beyond wine. For me, it includes music, and any sort of souvenir from this tragedy. There are other ways to make a living and to market a bottle of wine.

It's sad to see dignity defeated by greed. Shame on us.

MLK Memorial Unveiled

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial was unveiled, yesterday, on the National Mall in D.C. The granite statue of King stands 30 feet tall and is called "The Stone Of Hope." It's part of a four acre, $120 million tribute to the civil rights leader.

It should be pointed out that the statue is made of Chinese granite and was sculpted by Lei Yixin, a master sculptor from Changsha, China. The statue was made in China and reassembled, here.

Does it sound odd to you that we outsourced this very special project to China?

Get used to it!

Being Grumpy Can Make You Sick

This is the result of a real study! We've heard the expression, "Worried Sick." Now you can get sick from being grumpy.

For the past 15 years, Professor Carsten Wrosch has been paying his mortgage by investigating how emotions affect people. He said: "Bitterness may forecast patterns of biological dysregulation, a physiological impairment that can affect metabolism, immune response or organ function and physical disease."

If you are getting grumpy about your tax dollars going to fund a grant for such research, don't be...the study was done in Canada.

Friday Foto - Ines Cudna

This week's Friday Foto features the famous Ines Cudna. After checking the archives, I can't believe that I have overlooked Ines!

The lady is 27 years old and is known for her acting and her modeling.

Wednesday Foto - Demi Rose Mawby

Demi Rose Mawby

This week's Wednesday Foto comes to us from England...I think.

She's a teenager named Demi Rose Mawby. She's not a model, nor an actress. The best that I can explain it, is that Demi is an "Internet Personality."

With the Internet, it is now possible to be famous because you are famous. It sounds shallow, but it's not. I've been working on this for years!

Click the picture to get the full effect and have a fantastic remainder of the week!

Bachmann Botches Elvis Tribute

Michele Bachmann made a mistake today. It wasn't a slip of the tongue, it was more than that. She's running for the Republican nomination for president of the United States. You would think that she and her people would have their fecal material "together." Apparently not.

At a "Join Team Bachmann" rally in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the event opened with a recording of Elvis' "Promised Land."

Then, she comes out and says, "Before we get started, let's all say 'Happy Birthday' to Elvis Presley today... You can't do better than Elvis Presley and we thought we would celebrate his birthday as we get started celebrating taking our country back to work."

The problem is...today is not Elvis' birthday. It is the anniversary of his death. If she didn't know that, OK. You would think that she would surround herself with people who could set a correct theme. I guess, my point is that we should not vote for her nor against her because she made this error. However, we wonder if we want a person as president who relies on people who don't do their homework.

By the way, Presley was born Jan. 8, 1935, and died Aug. 16, 1977.

AC/DC Wine

This seems a bit odd to me. Rockers AC/DC are selling their names to be used as a line of wine.

The Australian band has entered into a partnership with New South Wales, Austrailia-based winery Warburn Estate to produce four bottled varieties, named after some of their hits -- AC/DC "Highway to Hell" Cabernet Sauvignon, AC/DC "Hells Bells" Sauvignon Blanc, AC/DC "Back in Black" Shiraz and AC/DC "You Shook Me All Night Long" Moscato, .

In other news, Ernest & Julio Gallo have a new CD coming out and are thinking of a concert tour!

Monday Foto - Kacey Barnfield

Kacey Barnfield

This week we kick things off with young Kacey Barnfield. She's been an actress since she was 9 years old.

The 23 year old Kacey is familiar with people who watch English TV. That doesn't include me, so I'll be clicking on the image to get the full effect.

Have a great week!

Russian Politics?

This is a little complicated. It involves Russian youth who drink beer in public, the Russian President and young women who partially strip...for a cause.

Do I have your attention?

The three little girls in the picture are part of a movement which was sparked by a social media site which is faithful to President Dmitry Medvedev. The prez thinks that young Russian boys should not be drinking beer in public. The trio of lovelies is relaying the message.

The boys are confused.

There is a similar campaign seeking support for Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin where girls are also urged to strip (to their bikinis)in public.

Could you imagine what kind of a primary season we could have in the U.S.?

Pawlenty Done

Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty quits the Republican campaign for the presidential nomination. He didn't wait too long after finishing third in yesterday's Iowa Straw Poll.

You see, Pawlenty spent plenty of money in Iowa. The hawk eye state was a "test" for him. If he spent big money on commercials, etc, and did not have big results, it would be a big disappointment for him.

It's not ideas, it's money, honey.

If he has any campaign money remaining, where does it go?

Stage Collapses At Indiana State Fair

At least five people were killed, Saturday night as high winds caused a stage to collapse at the grandstand of the Indiana State Fair. The country music act Sugarland was to perform when winds of up to 70 mph caused the stage to sway. Authorities called for an evacuation within 10 minutes of the tragedy. In addition to the four fatalities, at least two dozen people were seriously injured.

The entire fair is closed on Sunday with a memorial service scheduled for Monday.

Soros Sued By Spurned Ex

George & Adriana during happier times.

George Soros is a billionaire businessman. If you listen to Glen Beck, then you know who Soros is. Well, anyway, the 80 year old Soros has a 28 year old ex-girlfriend, a Brazilian Soap Opera Star, named Adriana Ferreyr. The two had been an "on again/off again" item for about 5 years. Let's see, 5 years ago, old George was 75 and Adriana was 23....

Soros, whose net worth is estimated at $14.5 billion, promised Adriana a $1.9 million apartment, on the upper east side of Manhattan. Instead of giving her the apartment, he gave it to another woman!

To make up for this, Soros promised Adriana a larger apartment. He later backed out and bingo! Adriana brings on a $50 million lawsuit!

You've gotta wonder if this guy is really smart enough to be as rich as he is. Didn't Howard Hughes teach is anything?

This is why, as I remember when I was single, I aggressively avoided all contact with Brazilian Soap Opera Stars!

Olympic Pee-er Gets Dumped

Robert "Sandy" Vietze, the 18 year old skier from Warren, Vermont has been booted from the U.S. Ski team.

You may remember that 18 year old Vietze was arrested for urinating on a sleeping 11 year old girl, on a Jet Blue flight from Portland, Oregon to New York City.

Vietze says that he had 8 drinks before boarding the plane. Following his performance, the 6 foot 5 inch, 195 pound preppy pee-er was detained by police at JFK, early Wednesday. Preliminary charges of exposing himself in public were dropped!

That was on Wednesday. Two days later, U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Executive Vice President of Athletics Luke Bodensteiner emailed a statement to The Associated Press, saying that Vietze had been dismissed from the team for conduct violations.

Vietze was among the 75 most elite skiers in the nation -- until things went downhill...

His name was bumped from the team's developmental roster on Thursday.

The leaky loser expressed no remorse Thursday outside his family's palatial Vermont home, where he ignored questions about the incident and showed no interest in apologizing to his victim.

Friday Foto - Natalia Domestico

Natalia Domestico
For this week's Friday Foto, we feature Natalia Domestico. Natalia is a very successful model. Sadly, there are not many pictures of her on the Internet. Even her own website, http://www.nataliadomestico.com/ is a little "light" on pictures. This will probably change in the near future.

Natalia is one smart cookie.  She speaks four languages.  One of them, I'm sure, is yours!

UAE Helps Joplin

The largest tornado in the U.S. in more than 60 years damaged 30% of Joplin, Missouri on May 22. 160 people were killed.

As the rebuilding continues in Joplin, school is scheduled to begin next week. The High School and two other schools were destroyed in the tornado. Half of all Joplin school buildings were damaged.

Support has been coming in from around the world. The largest single donation comes from the United Arab Emirates. They are offering $500,000 for laptop computers for students. Insurance is helping, but the total price tag for student computers is $2.7 million. UAE is also offering to "match" additional donations up to $500,000.

While the loss of life can never be "fixed", it is a triumph of the human spirit to see neighbors, from everywhere, help in the recovery effort. It's what we do, here, in the American midwest. It's also what good and decent people do, no matter where they live.

On behalf of the 50,000 people of Joplin, to the UAE and all contributors, we at the blog say THANK YOU!

Dirty Dancing Remake

Some things are so special that they cannot be imitated nor enhanced. Dirty Dancing was a low budget classic...a hit movie that wasn't supposed to be. Every part of that story was perfect. The time period was portrayed accurately, the costumes, the language, the acting, the direction, and yes, the dancing, were all perfectly executed. The casting was nothing short of genius!

Why someone would try to redo this picture is beyond me! I can't see any room for improvement.

If Hollywood wants to make a teenage, coming of age, romance, there are many different possibilities. I can think of half a dozen off the top of my head.

Do we ever hear of an artist attempting to do a remake of the Mona Lisa? Of course not!

I'd much rather see that we leave the classics alone and see us develop some fresh thought...c'mon, it's Hollywood...we can fake it!

Fred Imus Passes

Many of us are familiar with Don Imus, the rascal radio host of the nationally syndicated "Imus In The Morning" - which also airs on the Fox Business Channel. Don's younger brother, Fred, passed away, this weekend. He was found in his Tucson, Arizona home after he failed to show up for "Fred's Trailer Park Bash," a weekend radio show he co hosted with Don Collier and "Missy" on Sirius XM's Outlaw Country channel.

As a regular listener to Imus In The Morning, I got to know Fred Imus. He was a frequent guest and very similar to Don, without the big city trappings.  It was almost like Imus was interviewing himself!

Fred was a railroad worker, an Army vet, an automobile body shop worker and owner, a radio personality, an author and a song writer. He co-wrote "I Don't Want To Have To Marry You" a 1976 #1 country hit for Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius. It was voted song of the year by Music City News.

Fred was also a writer, of sorts. In 1997, he teamed up with brother Don for the book, "Two Guys Four Corners," which featured photographs and reminiscences of the Southwest. He also joined Daily News columnist Mike Lupica for 1998's "The Fred Book," which featured Fred's thoughts on life.

Fred was 69. We offer sincere condolences to the family and to friends of Mr. Imus.

Skinny Dipping, Hamburg Style

She is known as Die Badende (The Bather). She's a 13 foot high and 67 foot long statue, cooling off for ten days in Hamburg's Inner Alster Lake.

The sculpture, made from a steel cage covered with Styrofoam almost a foot thick by artist Oliver Voss, is a massive advertisement for the British beauty brand Soap & Glory.

Soap & Glory was introduced in Germany last year. This is the company's way of saying "Thanks" for the product's popularity.

I'm wondering if the folks on Madison Avenue are looking out their windows at the East River a little differently, now?

S & P: We're Screwed!

Moe, Larry & Curly

The timing of this announcement "says something." Lately, I've noticed that when the U.S. Government has bad news for us, it will be announced at the beginning of the weekend. Do they think that we will forget about it on Monday? The problem is that some of us will! Many of us will never know or understand what happened to our country's credit rating. They are too busy making sure that their Iphones are fully charged.

Here it is: Since 1917, the USA has had a triple A credit rating. Translation: We paid our bills and if we needed to borrow money, we would get a low interest rate.

That's done, now. For the first time, EVER, our country's credit rating has been downgraded from AAA to AA+. What does this mean? It means that it will be more expensive to be as "in debt" as we are - INTEREST RATES WILL SOAR -- OUR NATIONAL DEBT SOARS! To pay for this, our taxes will go through the roof! Personally, I don't think that any tax increase can get us out of debt.

Blame? Both houses of Congress, our executive branch and ultimately us - for voting these bozo's into office.  The debt ceiling is too high!  The spending cuts were not deep enough!  S&P saw this, too bad the alcoholics in DC didn't.

Next time, we may want to vote for someone who tells us what we don't want to hear!?

MDA Cans Jerry Lewis

Jerry Lewis at the end of the 2010 MDA Labor Day Telethon.
$63,7 million was raised.  He didn't know it, but it was to be
his final telethon.

Jerry Lewis is 85 years old. For the past 59 years he has been the National Chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. For the past 45 years he has hosted a national telethon for the organization. Before that, he hosted local telethons dating back to the early 1950s. It is estimated that the man is responsible for raising $2.5 billion for MDA!

His biggest telethon haul was $65 million in 2008. 2008? That's when the economy crapped out. His "numbers" have been "off" since '08.

His Labor Day show was always important to the people with Muscular Dystrophy. I worked with the local chapter for 15 years and I could see the hope in the eyes of those affected. To the kids with muscular diseases, Jerry Lewis was, and is, a god!  MDA does wonderful work for so many. Much more could be done.

What happened to Jerry Lewis is unfortunate. We must remember that he was dismissed by the national level of MDA. We should also remember that egos and emotions, when bruised, can cause hasty and unwise decisions.  The mysterious nature of this change is troubling.

His fellow comedians are speaking out. After all, Jerry Lewis "wrote the book" on telethons and he broke some new ground for comedy. He has inspired and comforted so many. He deserves better than the treatment that he is getting.

It should be an interesting telethon, this year. It will be interesting to see if anyone talks about "the elephant" on the stage. The"elephant" will be the absence of Jerry Lewis.

"Obama Disappoint Mints" Sales Banned At UT

Mints are supposed to give your mouth a "good taste." At the University of Tennessee Bookstore they were selling a novelty item called Obama Disappoint Mints. A student was bothered by this, so he contacted his state representative! The State Rep, who happens to be a Democrat, visited the bookstore and had them removed. The thinking was that a state supported school should not support such satire of an elected official.

I should point out that the same bookstore sold the George W. Bush Impeach Mints when GW was in office.

Nobody complained.

Is this is unscientific proof that University of Tennessee Democrat students whine more than their Republican counterparts?   Or, maybe they don't have a sense of humor or maybe freedom of expression is just not so important, anymore....

Windmills Kill Birds...Lots Of Birds

Back in 2008, ExxonMobil pleaded guilty in federal court to killing 85 birds that had come into contact with crude oil or other pollutants in uncovered tanks or waste-water facilities on its properties. The birds were protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which dates back to 1918. The company agreed to pay $600,000 in fines and fees. That comes out to $7,058.82 per bird.

Windmills
In July 2008, the Oregon-based electric utility PacifiCorp paid $1.4 million in fines and restitution for killing 232 eagles in Wyoming over the past two years. The birds were electrocuted by poorly-designed power lines. This comes out to $6,034.48 per eagle.

Yet there is one group of energy producers that are not being prosecuted for killing birds: wind-power companies. And wind-powered turbines are killing a vast number of birds every year.

A July 2008 study of the wind farm at Altamont Pass, Calif., estimated that its turbines kill an average of 80 golden eagles per year. The study, funded by the Alameda County Community Development Agency, also estimated that about 10,000 birds—nearly all protected by the migratory bird act—are being whacked every year at Altamont.

By 2030, environmental and lobby groups are pushing for the U.S. to be producing 20% of its electricity from wind. Meeting that goal, according to the Department of Energy, will require the U.S. to have about 300,000 megawatts of wind capacity, a 12-fold increase over 2008 levels. If that target is achieved, we can expect some 300,000 birds, at the least, to be killed by wind turbines each year.

Why do I bring this up?

Besides the unfair practice of fining traditional utilities and giving the windmill folks a free pass, I can't think of a reason for bringing this up. I like the environment and the fresh air and all that stuff.  I do not like to be forced to spend more money than I should on an inefficient system that is more harmful to the environment (birds) than we are led to believe.

Grow up, folks. Traditional utility power is cheaper, even when you factor in the $6,000 - $7,000 fine per dead bird that the windmill people don't have to pay.

A-Rod Poker Problem? You Bet!

Until now, I thought that Alex Rodriguez was a bright guy. It turns out that he could be the dumbest jock in the history of professional sport. I say this because he has so much to lose. I also say this because in 2005, his employer (The Yankees) and the league (MLB) warned him about his gambling.

He's accused of playing in illegal poker games. These are not your typical Friday night games with your buddies. No, these would be high stakes games, held in Beverly Hills. The games are the type that involve hundreds of thousands of dollars. Actors Ben Affleck, Tobey McGuire and Leonardo DiCaprio have been linked to such activity.

The investigation has yet to begin. Witnesses have already gone "public."

Right about now, A-Rod could use a pair of aces.

Old Style Leaving Wrigley Field

Old Style Beer is seeking to end it's 61 year association with Wrigley Field and the Chicago Cubs. This will likely happen at the end of the 2011 season. Coors Lite is the possible replacement.

This doesn't directly affect me as I live far enough away from Wrigley Field that I may see a single game every couple of years. What I see with the beer thing is that a smaller, local/regional beer is being replaced by a nationally produced LITE beer. That's right, the big guys get bigger and the public continues to pay a premium for beer at the ballpark and, in 2012, for the watered down lite version.

The theme at Wrigley continues: Bad Baseball  >>>> Bad Beer.

I should explain. Bad baseball = no championship in 102+ years.
Bad beer = watered down national brand replacing traditional regular beer.

I should point out that Old Style is leaving Wrigley to spend money on promoting Old Style LITE!

Two True Stories

These two stories are true and both are worth reading.

STORY NUMBER ONE

Capone with "Easy Eddie"

Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago. Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder.

Capone had a lawyer nicknamed "Easy Eddie." He was Capone's lawyer for a good reason. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie's skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time.

To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends, as well. For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day. The estate was so large that it filled an entire Chicago City block.

Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocity that went on around him.

Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly. Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars and a good education. Nothing was withheld. Price was no object.

And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to teach him right from wrong. Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was.

Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn't give his son; he couldn't pass on a good name or a good example.

One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Easy Eddie wanted to rectify wrongs he had done.

He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al "Scarface" Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some semblance of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great. So, he testified.

Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago Street. But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay. Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion and a poem clipped from a magazine.

The poem read:

"The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. Now is the only time you own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still."

STORY NUMBER TWO

World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Commander Butch O'Hare.

He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific.

One day, his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank.

He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship.

His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet.

As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward the American fleet.

The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenseless. He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger. There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the fleet.

Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent.

Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible, rendering them unfit to fly.

Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction.

Deeply relieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier.

Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return. The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his fleet. He had, in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft. This took place on February 20, 1942, and for that action, Butch became the Navy's first Ace of WW II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Medal of Honor.

A year later, Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His home town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today, O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man.

So, the next time you find yourself at O'Hare International, give some thought to visiting Butch's memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of Honor. It's located between Terminals 1 and 2.

SO WHAT DO THESE TWO STORIES HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER?

Butch O'Hare was "Easy Eddie's" son.

(Pretty cool, eh?)
